The semantic differential technique was developed by Charles E. Osgood (Osgood et al., ), who designed it to measure the connotations of words or concepts. Using factor analysis of large sets of semantic differential data, he found three recurring attitudes that people used in assessing words and phrases: evaluation (such as “good/bad disagreement with 13 descriptors of agriculture on a Likert-type scale of 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree).Subscales of the instruments were subjected to factor analysis to assist validity determination.
Scales were found to be reliable and valid. The mean scores of the 13 descriptors of agriculture among high school tenth grade students Applications of the semantic differential technique, involving small numbers of concepts and scales and eliciting descriptions of the concepts rather than metaphoric meanings, present special semantic differential items.
Semantic differential scales have three common factors: an Evaluative factor covering such dimensions as good-bad, pleasant-unpleasant and positive-negative; a Potency factor representing the dimensions of strong-weak, hard-soft and heavy-light, and an Activity factor with such Semantic scales: This type of scale makes extensive use of words rather than numbers.
Respondents describe their feelings about the products or brands on scales with semantic labels. When bipolar adjectives are used at the end points of the scales, these are termed semantic differential The Semantic Differential was validated with agricultural populations by Larrabee.
